What this site is

Good Houses publishes cost estimates, general guidance and figures submitted by homeowners about home improvement work in the UK. Nothing on this site is professional advice. For a specific project, get quotes and advice from qualified tradespeople and, where it matters, a surveyor, an architect or a solicitor.

Estimates, not guarantees

Calculator results and area figures are estimates we maintain ourselves. They are not official data and they can be wrong. Real costs are submitted by other people and are not independently verified beyond the checks described on our Data and sources page.

Quotes and partner businesses

What happens when you ask for a quote depends on the service and where you are. We may pass your details to a partner business so it can quote for the work. For some partners you may instead be sent to their own site or a form they run, in which case your details go to them directly and we never hold them. Where we have no partner covering your area, your enquiry stays with us and we follow it up ourselves. The form tells you which of these applies before you submit anything, and our Privacy policy sets out what we collect either way.

Partner businesses are independent of us. The work they do, the prices they charge and the contract you enter into are between you and them, not us.

Acceptable use

Do not submit false, defamatory or promotional content dressed up as a genuine homeowner submission. Do not scrape, bulk-extract or automate access to the site beyond ordinary browsing.

Affiliate links and paid placements

Some links on this site may be affiliate links. Where one is, and you click it and buy something, we may earn a small commission. This never affects the price you pay. A link that earns us a commission is labelled next to the link itself, not only here. Where a product is mentioned and the link earns us nothing, there is no label, because claiming a commission we do not receive would be as untrue as hiding one we do.

Some placements may be paid for, such as an estate agent on an area page. Where a placement is paid for it is labelled Sponsored, in plain words. We never describe a paid placement as best, top or recommended, because those words would imply it was chosen on merit.

Whether something earns us a commission has no bearing on whether we recommend it, or on what we say about it. If a product is a poor choice we will say so, commission or not.

When you ask for a quote, we may be paid by the partner business your enquiry goes to. That payment does not change the cost figures published on this site, which are maintained separately from any commercial arrangement.

Liability

We take care over what we publish, but we cannot promise that every figure is accurate or current, and we are not liable for decisions you make based on an estimate or on something another user submitted. Nothing here limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Intellectual property

The design, text and calculators on this site belong to Good Houses unless stated otherwise. Content you submit stays attributed to you, and by submitting it you allow us to display, aggregate and use it on the site.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
