Heating quotes

Work on how your house heats water and rooms. That covers a new boiler, a new hot water cylinder, and replacing radiators, either as one job or separately.

Is your property suitable?

Two situations are worth knowing about.

If you have weak pressure upstairs and an old cylinder fed by tanks in the loft, changing to an unvented cylinder usually makes a noticeable difference to how the house works day to day.

The second is radiators. If a room never gets properly warm, the radiator may simply be too small or the wrong output for the space. A BTU calculator tells you what output that room actually needs, and many modern radiators produce considerably more heat for the same size, so replacing one can fix a cold room without touching the rest of the system.

Typical cost range

£2,300 – £17,250

Excludes VAT, and includes a 15% contingency allowance for the unexpected.

Prices for the same heating job vary more between firms than in most trades, and they vary by where you are, so get as many quotes as you reasonably can.

What to ask before hiring

Ask whether the engineer is Gas Safe registered where gas work is involved. Ask whether the quote includes a system flush and new controls. Ask what happens to the old tanks if you are moving to an unvented cylinder. Ask whether radiators have been sized for each room or simply matched to what is already there. Ask what guarantee comes with the work.

Red flags

Anyone doing gas work who is not Gas Safe registered, which you can check yourself rather than take on trust. A boiler recommended without anyone looking at your radiators or asking how the house is used. A quote that does not say what happens to the old system.

When the quotes come in

Almost nobody publishes what these jobs settle at, because the people writing about them are the people doing the quoting. If you go ahead, come back and tell us what you accepted. It takes less than 3 minutes, and it is the only way this page ever carries real numbers instead of estimates.

Common questions

Why is the water pressure poor upstairs?

Often an old cylinder fed by tanks in the loft. Changing to an unvented cylinder usually makes a noticeable difference to how the house works day to day.

Would bigger radiators heat my room better?

Possibly. If a room never gets properly warm the radiator may be too small or the wrong output for the space. A BTU calculator tells you what output that room actually needs, and many modern radiators produce considerably more heat for the same size.

How do I check an installer is qualified for gas work?

Ask whether they are Gas Safe registered, and check it yourself rather than take it on trust.

Why do heating quotes differ so much?

Prices for the same heating job vary more between firms than in most trades, and they vary by where you are, so get as many quotes as you reasonably can.
