Bathroom quotes

Replacing a bathroom, ensuite or cloakroom: sanitaryware, tiling, and usually the plumbing, electrics and ventilation behind them.

Is your property suitable?

Any house, but a bathroom is a more personal room than most, so an average figure describes fewer people here than elsewhere. What separates one bathroom from another is size, the materials you choose, and whether the plumbing has to move.

Typical cost range

£1,725 – £16,100

Excludes VAT, and includes a 15% contingency allowance for the unexpected.

The bathroom cost calculator gives a range, and there is also a way to narrow it down yourself that is worth an evening. Price the actual things you want: the cabinet, the basin, the toilet, and the bath or shower enclosure, from UK retailers you would genuinely buy from. Then measure the area you are tiling and price the tiles you like by the square metre. That gives you the cost of your own taste, which is the part no calculator can guess.

Moving the plumbing is what quietly changes the price. Keeping everything where it is costs considerably less than a new layout.

What to ask before hiring

Ask whether sanitaryware is supplied by you or by them, and what happens if you supply it and something is faulty. Ask whether tiling is included, and how it is measured and charged. Ask about ventilation and extraction. Ask how long the room will be out of use, and what you are meant to do if it is your only bathroom.

Red flags

No mention of waterproofing behind the tiles in a shower area. No extraction. A quote that does not say who is supplying what. Anyone happy to move a toilet without discussing where the waste is going.

When the quotes come in

Almost nobody publishes what these jobs settle at, because the people writing about them are the people doing the quoting. If you go ahead, come back and tell us what you accepted. It takes less than 3 minutes, and it is the only way this page ever carries real numbers instead of estimates.

Common questions

How can I work out what my bathroom will cost?

Price the actual things you want, the cabinet, basin, toilet and bath or shower enclosure, from retailers you would genuinely buy from. Then measure the area you are tiling and price the tiles by the square metre. That gives you the cost of your own taste.

Does moving the bath or toilet cost much more?

Yes. Moving plumbing is what quietly changes the price. Keeping everything where it is costs considerably less than a new layout.

What is most often missing from a bathroom quote?

Waterproofing behind the tiles in a shower area, and extraction. Both should be in the conversation, and a quote that mentions neither is worth questioning.

What if it is my only bathroom?

Ask how long the room will be out of use before the work starts, and agree what you are meant to do in the meantime.
